Rangers 1 v 1 Leeds Utd
Leeds United emerged from a tough encounter in Glasgow with their
unbeaten pre-season record intact as Alan Smith's goal earned them a 1-1 draw with their Ibrox hosts.
Smith's goal, his first this pre-season,
came on 17 minutes when he headed home Harte's superb cross. It bent in towards goal and Smith was there to
apply the killer touch, sending the ball into the top corner of the net.
Flo missed a great chance straight from the kick-off when Cannigia
played in Tore Andre Flo, but the Norwegian sliced his shot wide from 12 yards.
A simple ball over the top of the Rangers defence just after the
half-hour mark nearly yeilded another goal for Leeds. Robinson's long punt downfield was met by Robbie Keane who put
his shot over. Amorouso had a chance to level things with a free-kick, but Robinson got well behind his effort.
Woodgate and Matteo were in commanding form at the back, keeping
Rangers from any decent changes, but their partnership was broken up after 23 minutes when Woodgate was forced to go off.
The centre-back was stretching for a ball and got a stud in his knee as he clashed with Ricksen, gashing his knee which required
nine stitches.
Alan Smith did find the net again just before half-time, but his
effort was ruled out for offside.
Five minutes into the second half and Rangers drew level.
Ian Harte making a tackle on 'Gers striker Shota Arveladze inside the box, the Georgian striker appearing
to make the most of the challenge by going to ground and the referee Hugh Dallas pointed to the spot for a penalty.
Avaladze took the penalty himself, sending Nigel Martyn the wrong way.
Eirik Bakke nearly put Leeds back in front with a fierce 25-yard
shot that Klos in the Rangers goal did well to turn behind for a corner. Ian Harte was given a few opportunities to
test Klos with his free-kicks, but found the German each time.
Bakke had another great opportunity to win the game for Leeds but
once more the Rangers keeper thwarted him as he saved the Norwegian's shot from point blank range after he was found unmarked
in the box.
A fair result in the end and a useful exercise for Leeds, who stepped
up their pre-season preparations significantly against top class opposition and with the game played at a good pace.
